Séroux d'Agincourt, "Histoire de l'art," 1823, gives engrs. of two miniatures to Inf. xxvi. 101-103, xxix. 73-75 from a ms. then in the possession of Cardinal Zelada, former librarian of the Vatican.

Plate 67 in the album to Lord Vernon's ed of the Inferno, 1858-65, reproduces a miniature to Inf xxi. 13 from a codex at that time in the possession of Seymour Kirkup.

Engraved facsimiles of several terzine from the Bartolini, Trivulzi and Fontanini mss. are given in vol. i of the 1823-28 ed. of the Divina commedia; - from the Ambrosian, Trivulzi and Palermo mss. in Scarabelli's separately printed prefaces to the 1870-73 ed. of the Divina commedia (1014 F 79); from mss. in the British Museum, Bodleian and Cambridge University libraries in Barlow's "Contributions," 1864.

G. Cardona gives engrs. of text of Inf. vii. 1-2 as found in two mss. in the Biblioteca Casanatense and the Biblioteca Angelica, and A. Lorini of the text of Inf. xxxiii. 55-57 as found in a ms. at Cortona. Specimens of chirography are also given in Scarabelli's edition of the "Codice frammentario della Divina commedia di pertinenza della biblioteca dell' università di Bologna," 1869.

PICTORIAL ILLUSTRATIONS OF DANTE'S
LIFE AND WORKS.

The cataloguing of iconographic material of almost every kind is of necessity a work where the cataloguer must supply much of the information given. Many works of art have neither the signature of the artist nor the date of execution. Reproductions often have varying titles and sometimes give no clue as to what the artist aimed to portray. The cataloguer must choose that title which will best serve to identify the picture.

Paintings when owned by private individuals are constantly changing hands, and even when they are the property of a national government they are frequently shifted from one public gallery to another. In referring to the whereabouts of the various pictures spoken of in the following pages the latest information has been sought in recent catalogues and periodicals, as well as by personal inquiry, but it is no more than likely that some of those whose names are here given as owners of this or that picture have since died and their collections been dispersed.

Reproductions of the anonymous illustrations in the early editions of Dante are referred to in the notes to the respective entries in Part I. Since the publication of that portion of the Catalogue, the Library has received the work of Kraus, containing in the chapter on "Die Buchillustration der Commedia," pp. 595-606, reproductions of a number of interesting examples of these early Dante illustrations. A list of them, together with some others found in recent publications, is here given:

1481. First page of the Inf. in a delicately illuminated copy, with vignette, is given in Kraus, p. 597, and the upper half of the same page in a more highly illuminated copy is on p. 193 of Kraus. The vignette to Inf. ii is given in Kraus, p 598, and on a larger scale, clipped from the catalogue of the Librairie Damascène Morgand, Paris, avril, 1900, no. 50, in Dante scrapbook, ii, p. 155.

1487. The illustration to Inf. v, clipped from the abovementioned catalogue of Morgand's, is in Dante scrap-book, ii, p. 155. That to Purg. i is in Kraus, p. 599.

1491. March edition. The full-page wdcts. to the Inf. and Par. are reproduced in Giornale dantesco, 1900. an. viii, pp. 123, 127. The one to the Inf. is given (surrounded by the ornamental border of the 1493 and 1497 editions) in Kraus, p. 601, although it is there wrongly referred to as from the 1487 edition.

1491. November edition. A few of the vignettes are reproduced in the volume of addresses published by the Comitato Milanese of the Società Dantesca Italiana under the title "Con Dante e per Dante," 1898.

1512. Title-page and full-page wdct to Inf. in Giornale dantesco, 1900, an. viii, p. 119. Vignette to Inf. vi in Kraus, p. 603. 1544. Wdct. to Purg. vii in Kraus, p. 604.

Based on the popular legend to which Boccaccio gave form in his life of Dante, § viii, to the effect that as Dante was one day passing a group of women he overheard one of them say: "Do you see the man who goes to Hell, and returns again, at his pleasure, and brings up here tidings of them that be below?" To which it was answered: "In truth it must needs be as thou savest. See'st thou not how his beard is crisped and his skin darkened by the heat and smoke that are below?" Boccaccio lays the scene of the story in Verona.
