This paraphrase had appeared in the Boston Daily advertiser, Feb. 9, 1841, (two clippings of which are preserved in the Har

vard collection, Dn. 46. 1. 4; Dn. 250. 7) signed "L," but the paraphrase is erroneously attributed in the Harvard catalogue, p. 14, to Longfellow. In revised form it was included in the author's "Poems," 1854. Many of Parsons's poems were inspired by passages from Dante, notably his "La pineta distrutta," "Sotto l' uspergo del sentirsi puro, "Paradisi gloria," and the sonnet "Ben dell' intelletto," of which latter an early proof impression is inserted in the Cornell copy of his "Poems," 1893, accompanied by an autograph note from Mrs. Parsons.
