Broglie, J. V: A., duc de. Maurice de Saxe et le

marquis d'Argenson. 2 v.

"The Duke of Broglie writes extremely well; and his knowledge of the reign of Louis XV., especially in respect to the foreign policy of France during the pe riod is probably not surpassed by any man living." Sat. rev., Aug. 1.

Broke, G: With sack and stock in Alaska.

"Very valuable to any one who intends to take the same trip. Sat. rev., July 4. Brooks, W: K. The oyster; a popular summary of a scientific study.

"Admirably illustrated, and discusses the possibili ties of oyster culture, the anatomy and development of the oyster, the artificial cultivation of oysters, the causes of the decline in the business and the remedy." - Nation, July 16.

Carew, F. W. No. 747; the autobiography of a Gipsy.

"He has written the best book about gipsy life that has hitherto appeared; a book which lovers of the wild North Devon moors and combs will put on the same shelf with 'Lorna Doone,' and the 'Outdoor life of the Reverend Jack Russell,' and which will be read with delight by many to whom that country is unknown." — Saturday review, Sept. 12. Cheyne, T: K. The origin and religious contents of the Psalter in the light of Old Testament criticism and the history of religions. (Bampton lectures.)

"In commending the book to critics and students of all schools, one or two general observations are to be made. It would be unjust to leave without mention the freshness of the book, the evidence which it affords that the author sees everything with his own eyes, whilst miss. ing nothing worthy which others have done. And the amount of information which it contains is truly remarkable, information which is enhanced in value by a good index of names and places, and another of pas sages of Scripture. The spirit which pervades the whole will be as helpful to many readers as the knowl edge it imparts, for here as in 'Job,' and Solomon,' we are made to feel that the world of literature, literature of the most fascinating interest, is immeasurably wider than we had been apt to imagine, and that its best products touch religion closely, and are intimately connected with the Bible." - Spectator, Aug. 1. Church, Mrs. E. M., now Mrs. F. Lean. There is no death.

Dobson, H. A. Horace Walpole; a memoir; with app. of books printed at the Strawberry Hill press; illust. by P. and L. Moran. 1890. "The ordinary man who turns over Walpole's let ters cannot do so without experiencing an unpleasant taste in his mouth. He thinks of the writer as he is described by Macaulay; and with the result that to no small extent his enjoyment is poisoned. If Macaulay had described Horace Walpole as a villain, it might not have mattered. Since, however, he chose to belittle him as a man by every device of his matchless rhet oric, the general reader finds it impossible to take pleas ure in reading Walpole without a sense of shame and humiliation. Those who desire to form a true estimate of Horace Walpole, cannot do better than to read Mr. Austin Dobson's delightful volume. Mr. Dobson is an admirer, but a judicious one, and on the whole, his picture of the man is eminently trustworthy.". Spectator, May 2.

Drane, A. T. History of St. Dominic; founder of the Friars Preachers.

"It is the most careful study in English of the begin. ning of a movement vital to this day, and powerfully affecting Western Christendom. It was a clearsighted as well as an enthusiastic mind that founder of a government that should lastingly attract and rule its adherents, with few important modifications, and only one radical and constitutional change - seized its opportunity, and left its stamp on the mediæval Church. It is a pleasure to be reminded, as Miss Drane has reminded us, of the strong, simple, unfalter ing characters of a ruder age, in ability and saintliness upon the level of our own noblest and best." — Spectutor, Aug. 22.

Gossip, G. H. D. Theory of the chess openings.

[ocr errors]

Mr. Gossip's tabulated analyses are very full, and they seem to be characterized by accuracy and insight. Each opening is adequately illustrated in its more im. portant variations, and in some cases a striking game is reproduced from actual play." Sat. rev., July 6. Gotch, J. A., and Brown, W. T. Architecture of the Rennaissance in England; views and details from buildings erected 1560-1630; with hist. and crit. text. Pt. 1.

"We are glad to see that Mr. Gotch is not illustrating only the lordly mansions which Nash and Richardson so skilfully depicted more than half a century ago, but is also selecting many beautiful examples of the more characteristically English type of house, the planning and design of which is a natural and purely native growth, unlike the larger and far more preten. tious palace-like dwellings which in most cases during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were, both in architectural form and in general scheme of arrangement, a foreign introduction. On the whole, the work is an excellent one; the illustrations are good, and the small amount of text is written with judgment and to the point. Moreover, the subject is an important one from many points of view, and the work of Mr. Gotch and his assistant will supply a very real need." - Sat. rev., Sept. 19. Gouraud, J. Gower, Lord R. "In no sense a technical work; it is simply a compilation of descriptive matter, all of which is superfi. cial and much of which is inaccurate. Its popular char. acter makes the inaccuracies less important than like inaccuracies have been in previous works by the same author, but it is a pity that any work emanating from an engineer should be so poorly prepared." — Nation, July 16.

Rev. critique, 16 mars.

Kluge, F. Etymological dictionary of the German language; tr. from the 4th Germ. ed. by J: F. Davis.

"Dr. Davis is not adequately qualified for the very difficult task which he has undertaken. "A pleasant account of a clever and genial woman. There is scarcely a name distinguished during the eighty years of her life but finds some mention in these pages. Some of the anecdotes are, perhaps, old ac quaintances in a new dress, and of some the accuracy might be questioned; but many have the charm of nov. elty as well as of raciness, and render the book eminently readable and attractive.” — Athenæum, June 27. Love, J. Scottish church music; its composers and sources.

"The title is misleading, as the book deals not only with Scotch, but also with German, French, Italian, English, and other hymn tunes. Apart from this the book is likely to be very useful, and is certainly interesting." Academy, Aug 22.

Rome.

"Mr. Rae, in the new edition of his able and exhaustive work, draws a happy distinction between social politics and state socialism. By the former, he means the development of popular rights and the equipment of the citizens for the performance of their duties; whereas the essence of State socialism is the assumption by the State of duties which the citizens would perform better for themselves." - Spectator, Aug. 22. So let us be glad that the managers conferred, and that M. Rousse countersigned the ticket of admission, rather doubtful as it is, of Mirabeau to the rank of 'grand écrivain." " Sat. rev., July 18. Sohm, R. Die Entstehung des deutschen Städtewe

sens.

- Revue critique, 30 mars. Sorel, A. L'Europe et la Révolution Française.

1887-91.

"M. Albert Sorel one of the most beautiful pens of Europe,' and one of her most erudite historians, puts very little heat in the controversy, and confines him. self for the most part to that process known in his own language as 'constatation.'" Sat. rev., Aug. 1. Spencer, H. Justice; being pt. 4 of the Principles of ethics.

"The general notion of justice from which Mr. Spencer professes to deduce the principles of just gov. ernment and laws is the liberty of each limited only by the like liberties of all.' Thus 'every man is free to do that which he wills, provided he infringes not the equal freedom of any other man.' This is, of course, very much like Kant's definition of right by 'the limitation of the freedom of any individual to the extent of its agreement with the freedom of all other individuals, in so far as this is possible by a universal law.' Mr. Spencer's expression is the neater; he arrived at it, he tells us, independently, and became aware of the coincidence only within the last few years. In deprecating a merely negative interpretation of his conception as if it were nothing but a formula of restraint, and insisting on the positive element, the right of freedom of action, as the primary one, Mr. Spencer is perfectly in accord with Savigny, whose authority in this field is perhaps even greater than Kant's. As regards the historical de. velopment of particular forms of justice, we think Mr. Spencer has not sufficiently marked the fact that the growth has been within historical times one of extension rather than intention."- Sat. rev., July 25.

Stephens, H: M. The story of Portugal. (Story of the nations.)

"Unlike most of the writers in this series, Mr. Steph. ens has given us a continuous history. In this he has done wisely; for few people, as he says, know enough of the history of Portugal to be able to derive much profit from a book dealing merely with certain episodes If his sentences are sometimes rather clumsily constructed, they are at least always intelligible, and to the point, and his narrative is by no means deficient in life."- Sat. rev., May 2.

and what we are certain of finding there, is a handy syllabus of all the ascertained or disputed points in the personal and literary career of (say) Catullus. If we want to know all that may be pleaded for or against the identification of Lesbia with Clodia, we shall find a clear summary of both sides of the question, and we shall also be told what treatises we must read before we may consider ourselves abreast of what is already known or has been argued and conjectured. takes in this work the broadest possible view of literature, does not exclude the books-which-are-not-books, but includes every technical and scientific treatise anything, in fact, written in the Latin language." — Sat. rev., Mar. 14.
