Morcar of Hereward-and the fact that it was published, not in the orthodox three octavos, but in four pocket volumes, is strongly indicative of fifty years since. Her novels, Reginald Lyle, Flies in Amber, The Hungarian Castle, The Jealous Wife, The Rival Beauties, The Martyns and the Daventrys, The Romance of the Harem, Speculation, &c., belong to a later school, and still find readers. Miss Pardoe also published Facts and Traditions of Portugal, 2 vols., and two works of the romantic and anecdotical school of History, on the Court and Reign of Francis the First, and the Court of France and Louis the Fourteenth. But she is best known by her boudoir books, or livres de luxe, as the French call them, of which her Beauties of the Bosphorus and the City of the Sultan, with the illustrations of the late Mr. Bartlett, was the most successful. | Miss Pardoe died at her residence in Montague Street, Portman Square, of congestion of the brain.

The vitality of established journals, which somebody has compared to that of Sir John Barleycorn, cannot be better illustrated than by the fact that copyright, machinery, and plant of the old Sun, Evening Newspaper, which still remains a high-price journal, was sold the other day at the Auction Mart for £2,420. The sale took place pursuant to a decree of the Court of Chancery. The purchaser was Mr. Farrer.

Sir James Emerson Tennent writes to say that the poem entitled Mortality, which the American papers have attributed to President Lincoln, was written by Mr. William Knox, a Scotch gentleman, who died in youth, about forty years ago, after publishing a small volume of lyrics under the title of Songs of Israel. Some account of Knox is, we believe, given in Messrs. Chambers's Cyclopædia of Literature. Sir James states that the lines were given to him by Mr. Knox in the year 1824.

A correspondent calls our attention to an error in a former number, in which Miss Braddon's novel of Lady Audley's Secret is mentioned as reprinted from Temple Bar. It was the same Authoress's story of Aurora Floyd which appeared in that magazine. The true history of the publication of Lady Audley's Secret is somewhat curious, and may furnish an anecdote for the future encouragement of authors who have a reputation to make. Its first chapters were published in the weekly magazine started about a year and a-half ago under the editorship of Mr. Charles Mackay, with the odd title of Robin Goodfellow. Robin Goodfellow having gone the way of many other new ventures of the kind before Lady Audley's Secret was fully unfolded, Miss Braddon was compelled to take up the story again in the Sixpenny Magazine, where it was brought to an end, and from which it was reprinted by Messrs. Tinsley Brothers. Such were the struggles to reach the public eye of one of the most brilliant and successful books of the day.

We understand, on good authority, that the practice of charging unpaid book-packets with letter postage, as a penalty, is likely soon to be discontinued.

A life of Victor Hugo, written, it is said, by his wife, is shortly to be published in Paris. The new critical weekly journal of which there has for some time been a rumour, will, we believe, be edited by Mr. Dicey, the Author of the Life of Count Cavour, and Rome in 1860. The first number will probably appear on the 3rd of January. We learn on good authority that the statement that it will be the property of Messrs. Macmillan & Co. is unfounded.

A New York correspondent writes under date of Nov. 25-"Money is abundant, and I suppose there will be more paid for photographic albums between now and January 1, in the States, than the amount of the whole book business of England in the same time. People are still as busy for them as ever, and binders all doing nothing else."

Lady Rachel Butler, the Authoress of the new novel entitled The Prophecy, is the wife of Lord James Butler, of Drumcondra Castle, and a relative of Earl Russell. The story is said to be founded upon a manuscript discovered at Brussels, in the year 1822, by the late Lord Clancarty, at the time our Ambassador at the Hague. This nobleman subsequently gave it to the Earl of Ormonde, who deposited it among the family records in Kilkenny Castle, where it now lies.

The editor of our Conservative contemporary, the Press, is not a reader of the Publishers' Circular, as is evident from the following remarkable paragraph of literary intelligence published in its columns a week ago :-" A piece of news more interesting to the English nation will be found in a portion of our Berlin correspondent's letter. To the list of Royal Authors may now be added the name of our own gracious Sovereign. A book from her pen will appear in a few days, under the title Meditations upon Death and Eternity. Though an original work, it is published as a translation. Our correspondent, who has seen some of the proofs of this literary curiosity, gives a favourable idea of its merits." This, of course, refers to the work published by Messrs. Trübner & Co. in August last, of which we gave some account in our number for September 1. Our readers need hardly be told that the work is not original, but is a translation of passages from Tschokke's Stunden der Andacht, selected by Her Majesty, and edited by Miss Frederica Rowan.

Mrs. Henry Wood, author of The Channings, The Halliburtons, East Lynne, &c., is writing a new tale for the Quiver, entitled William Adair, or Running away to Sea, a tale for boys, commencing in No. 61; and in the same journal are now publishing a series of able articles on Scripture and Geology, their agreement; and on Bishop Colenso and the Historical Accuracy of the Books of Moses.

An interesting correspondence is now appearing in the Athenæum on the subject of Dr. Colenso's recent work on the Pentateuch, between Dr. Hermann Adler, the learned Jewish Rabbi, and a

writer who subscribes himself Philobiblius, under which signature the readers of Dr. Colenso's work will have no difficulty in recognising Dr. Colenso himself. Philobiblius asserts that an agreement of views is impossible between Dr. Colenso and the party to which his opponent belongs; as the former explains the Bible by its own light, while the latter read it through the medium of the Talmud.

We understand that two translations of Villari's Life of Savonarola were being prepared for publication -one by Mr. L. Horner, the other by the Rev. P. Beaton. Mr. Horner's work was first announced for publication, and we learn that, through an arrangement with his publishers, Mr. Beaton's has been withdrawn.

A French publication, the Jardin des Racines Grecques, gives some interesting facts upon the rage of late years for collecting autographs in France. Some time since, at the sale of the library of M. Parisou, in Paris, a copy of Cæsar's Commentaries was offered for sale, of the value in itself of about two francs. The volume, however, contained a single note of about fifteen lines, believed to be in the handwriting of Montaigne, upon the back of the last leaf, the desire to possess which occasioned so great a competition among the autograph hunters, that the volume was finally knocked down to a representative of the Duc d'Aumale for 1,575 francs. This kind of bibliomania is equally conspicuous with regard to printed works which borrow a value from some historical circumstance. At the public sale of the MacCarthy library, one of the six copies of the Bible known as the Bible in forty-two lines, was bought for 20,000 francs. The celebrated Missal of Mary Stuart, which she held in her hand on mounting the scaffold, and which, it is said, bears a stain of her blood, is now worth 100,000 francs. But perhaps the most curious example which bibliography offers is the famous Garland of Julia, a manuscript on vellum given to Malle. Julie-Lucine d'Agennes de Ramboullet by her betrothed, the Duke of Montansier. This precious manuscript was purchased sixty years since, at the sale of the library of the Duke de la Vallière, for 14,510 francs; nowadays it would doubtless fetch an enormous

sum.
