"Well sustains the reputation already won by the au thor. There is less of directly local colouring and dialect than is usual in American stories dealing with the classes here represented; and the reader is accordingly not to look for the kind of handling which Mr. Bret Harte or Mr. Frank Stockton would severally employ in a similar case, but to expect his satisfaction to arise from carefully drawn types of character and dramatic fitness of details in which event he will not be disappointed."-R: F. "Full of incident, colour, and movement. In addition to the readers who live upon fiction, and deserve to be supplied with a sound article, there are slill some to whom style is sauce, if not solid food, and the charm of all Mrs. Hoey's novels lies in the straightfor wardness of her style; she writes what some American humorist describes as 'dry-champagne English.' There is a flavour of old-fashionedness about it. In this very important respect A stern chase' is, perhaps, in ad vance of Mrs. Hoey's previous novels. Altogether, this work will fully sustain Mrs. Hoey's reputation as a skilful writer of vivid, pure, and lively novels." -Spectator, June 26.

Graham, W: The social problem in its economical, moral, and political aspects.

CA G76

"In the fact that the modern school of prophets are leaving metaphysical questions and turning their attention to the condition of man on earth, Mr. Graham finds the best hope of a true and wise solution of the prob lem. Of the more special remedies, those favoured by Mr. Graham are: The spread of education, the furtherence of co-operative production by means of capital lent by the state, as Lassalle proposed, the extention of profit-sharing as a stepping-stone to true co-operation, and the wide diffusion of land by the creation (again with state aid) of peasant proprietors and holders of allotments. Next, certain heroic remedies are examined and found wanting. These are the land nationalization schemes of Mr. George, and Professor Wallace, and the more sweeping collectiveism of the Social Democratic Federation. A work which is never dull, and which contains food for deepest reflection." - Westminster review, July.

"Mr. Hadley deals mainly with the United States branch of the subject, but incidentally he includes Europe and India. He contrasts European, and more particularly English, systems with those of his own country, bringing out very clearly the differences of circumstance and the consequent differences in result in the various countries. The railway legislation of France and Germany is also briefly but ably sketched. Strange to say, Italy has had the most varied experience of different systems, and has most exhaustively investigated their merits. Consequently from the political and social point of view, Italian railway policy is the most instructive of all. This book contains nothing but solid, revelant, well-digested knowledge, useful not only to directors and legislators, but to political economists hardly less." — Westminster review, July.
