The Canon of Westminster, the Dean of Westminster, and the University of Oxford.

T is not easy to possess the minds of Churchmen generally with what it is that is at stake in the question between the Stanley and Colenso school and the Church. People escape from an unpleasant conclusion in every way that it is possible to escape. It is not their business. The case must, they think, be overstated. They have not had time to read the books. The men are men of high character and ability. They are much considered and esteemed in high places. Freedom of thought and discussion is an excellent thing. This is a day of "advanced science" and of "the manhood of the world." Protestantism means private judgment, and private judgment means Protestantism, &c. &c. &c.

Under cover of these and the like excuses, subterfuges, and platitudes; in the absence of any stern and steadfast rebuke on the part of the Church; with a good deal of assistance from much of what has been said, done, or written to counteract the mischief, but which has so far imbibed its spirit as to make it to be only the same thing in a more seemly shape, the evil marches on. Timid people begin to wonder which way the victory will be. The value of censure by Synod is not much recognised yet. It could hardly be otherwise, considering the history of the last hundred and fifty years. The particular censure which has been wrung from the Synod of Canterbury is not worthy of the occasion. What with Court favour and Church compromise, it is a time of some perplexity; and some men are asking what is going to remain to their children of the Scriptural Faith of the Church of England.

Just at this moment comes another-not an unexpected blow; heavy in itself, heavier in the manner and from the hand by which it has been

inflicted.

deservedly popular, the recognised leader of the A man for many reasons highly and school which tries the Truth of the Bible by the test of modern science, is promoted to one of the highest dignities and most influential positions in the Church. Dr. Stanley is nominated by the Crown Dean of Westminster. Some weep, some are indignant. Many shrug their shoulders and say what next? But the Church at large is strangely and ominously silent. There was a time when Bishops remonstrated. There is no such remonstrance now. In this strait of the Church one faithful man has broken the silence by way of formal "remonstrance and expostulation." His position is a peculiar one in relation to the appointment which has called it forth. He has not been found wanting to that position. Canon Wordsworth has placed the case upon its true ground, and has traced it to its broad issues.

We have that faith in the future of the Church of England that we accept his act as what it has been put into his heart by GoD to do for the Church's sake; and though it may seem to most men a small and uneventful thing, we believe that the time is fast coming when it will be recognised as all-important. The Guardian of the 9th inst. takes no notice of it in any shape, waiting, no doubt, to see what the Times would say.

One thing only we regret in the "Remonstrance and Expostulation." Canon Wordsworth appears to think it not only possible, but to be desired, that Dr. Stanley's renewed public assent and consent to the Formularies, and his renewed public subscription to the Articles of the Church of England, may be "charitably construed into a public retractation and recantation of whatever in his writings can be shown by fair and reasonable demonstration to be at variance with those Formularies and Articles of the Church."

Is there any sufficient foundation upon which to build up this" charitable construction?" Or does the Church, in her care for others' souls as well as for the soul of the offender, know anything of an
