A TALE.

BY THE

AUTHOR OF "AMY GRANT," "TWO HOMES," &c.

"Did we but see,

When life first opened, how our journey lay
Between its earliest and its closing day;

Or view ourselves, as we one time shall be

Who strive for the high prize,—such sight would break
The youthful spirit.”—d.

THE death of the writer of these pages while they were passing through the press, has given them a very pathetic interest for all who knew her. A strong wish was felt to impart something of this interest to those who did not know her,to associate with the book some faint image of the bright, gentle, and beautiful character of the writer. With this view a brief sketch was prepared, but on submitting it to those with whom the decision of the matter rested, so much repugnance to its publication was expressed, that it has been withdrawn, and is to be printed for private circulation only.
